West Virginia Grants for LED Stop Signs, School Zone & Pedestrian Safety

Alert Lighting Co.

West Virginia counties and municipalities have a couple of WVDOH administered paths to help pay for roadway and pedestrian safety upgrades, including LED stop signs and flashing school zone signage.

Alert Lighting Company builds MUTCD compliant, solar powered LED safety signs that fit directly into the scope of these programs.

Current West Virginia Grant Programs

Program Status Typical Eligible Projects Official Link
Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Ongoing, coordinated by WVDOH's Traffic Engineering Division Infrastructure improvements at locations with documented crash data, evaluated for positive safety benefit WVDOH Highway Safety
High Risk Rural Roads Program (HRRRP) Ongoing, targets county routes with above-average fatal and serious injury crash rates Safety improvements on rural county routes, which often lose out to higher-classification roads under standard HSIP scoring WVDOH Highway Safety Improvement Program Report

Note: West Virginia maintains more than 28,000 miles of county routes, and HRRRP funding exists specifically because these rural, low-volume roads often lose out to higher-classification routes in standard HSIP competition. A county route project may have a better shot through this program.

How These Programs Line Up With Alert Lighting Products

LED Stop Signs for Rural County Route Safety

HRRRP exists specifically to fund safety improvements on rural county routes with above-average crash rates. A solar powered LED stop sign is a documented, low cost countermeasure that fits this program well, and needs no grid power on remote county roads.

Flashing School Zone Signs

HSIP funds infrastructure improvements wherever crash data supports the need, including near schools. A solar powered LED school zone sign can be proposed for HSIP funding with the right documentation.

Pedestrian Crossing Visibility

West Virginia's Strategic Highway Safety Plan guides HSIP project selection statewide, including non-motorist safety. A flashing LED pedestrian crossing sign supports that priority.

What to Prepare Before Applying

  • Crash history or site documentation showing the safety need
  • Spec sheets and MUTCD compliance details for the equipment being requested
  • An itemized quote covering signage, mounting, and installation

Alert Lighting can provide all three for any West Virginia project.
