California Grants for LED Stop Signs, School Zone & Pedestrian Safety
Alert Lighting Co.California cities, counties, tribes, and schools have two major Caltrans administered paths to help pay for roadway and pedestrian safety upgrades, including LED stop signs and flashing school zone signage.
Alert Lighting Company builds MUTCD compliant, solar powered LED safety signs that fit directly into the scope of these programs.
Current California Grant Programs
| Program | Status | Typical Eligible Projects | Official Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), Cycle 13 | Call for projects announced July 1, 2026; application deadline November 2, 2026 | Infrastructure projects that reduce fatal and severe injury crashes, scored on benefit-cost ratio, open to local roads and tribal land | Caltrans Local HSIP |
| Active Transportation Program (ATP) | Ongoing statewide and regional cycles | Pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, Safe Routes to School projects, consolidates the former TAP, BTA, and state SRTS programs | Caltrans Active Transportation Program |
Note: a Local Roadway Safety Plan is required before an agency can apply for Local HSIP funds. HSIP funding has also been used to support Safe Routes to School projects where crash data supports it.
How These Programs Line Up With Alert Lighting Products
LED Stop Signs for High Benefit-Cost Projects
HSIP Cycle 13 scores applications on benefit-cost ratio using crash data. A solar powered LED stop sign is a low cost countermeasure that can improve that ratio at documented crash locations.
Flashing School Zone Signs
ATP funding folds in what used to be California's standalone Safe Routes to School program. A solar powered LED school zone sign fits directly into an ATP infrastructure application.
Pedestrian Crossing Visibility
Active Transportation: Pedestrians and Bicyclists is one of California's six SHSP high priority challenge areas. A flashing LED pedestrian crossing sign directly supports that priority at marked crossings.
